One More About Running

So, here's the deal.  I promise this isn't going to become a running blog because, let's not kid ourselves, I'm not exactly a runner.  But can I just let it out for a moment here?

Today I actually ran a whole mile.  And really, this is a big accomplishment for me.  Before today the most I could run without taking a walking break was a half mile.  So today felt... not too bad.  And I was kind of proud of myself.

The problem is, I also am feeling surprisingly discouraged.  Which seems weird considering I just successfully completed my first mini-goal.  But I am.  Discouraged, that is.  I know it's only been two and half weeks since I started any physical activity, which really isn't a very long time.  And I also know that my usual run/walk of fifteen minutes isn't exactly a stellar amount of time.  But man, this whole exercise thing is not increasing my energy level.  (Or making myself feel better about my body.  But that's a whole other issue.)

And I so want more energy.  It's kind of a big part of why I kick-started this whole thing in the first place.  I almost feel like I was able to get my butt out of bed (and do more with the girls) before I started all this.

Am I just impatient?  Am I not putting enough time in?  What is wrong with me?

I'm not going to quit, because even though I don't necessarily have more energy, I do feel better overall when I get out and do something, but man, it's kind of hard to feel motivated right now, I can tell you that.

Okay, venting over.  I'm going to try to just feel good because, even though it took two and a half weeks, I finally ran a full mile!

xoxo.
Christine

  1. I jumped to read your post when I saw the title. First of all, I am so very proud of you for starting something new and don't get discouraged! Building up the endurance to run farther and faster takes time - you will get there and you will find the energy that you are looking for because energy begets energy. The more you expend, the more you have. Good work! And congrats on your first mile!

  2. It takes time but it does work. This is one time you should listen to Nike and 'just do it.' You will not regret it.

    1. Nike, such a smart marketing tool. Yes, I will 'just do it' and continue to do it over and over. Thanks!

  3. I'm so impressed! I haven't even tried to run a mile since high school and even then, it was a sad sight to see. Keep at it and I'm sure it will get better and easier! (or, at least, that is what my running friends have told me!)

    1. Thanks for the support. Yes, before my last two years of college I was NOT a runner, and never thought I would be. The last two years of college somehow changed that, but alas, since then I again have not been a runner. And now I start again.

  4. I am in the same boat, except I lack motivation because of my career. However I decided I wasn't going to let it get me down as much as it could, and I'm starting a new workout routine for myself as well. Just make sure to keep yourself moving, drink ungodly amounts of water and don't give in to too many cravings. You'll start to see something!

Stopping by from Shell's PYHO :)

    1. Good luck on your new workout routine, and good for you!

Yes, I have to remember the water. I think I've forgotten about that.

  5. Don't think about the tired. Focus on the feeling of accomplishment with your one mile run under your belt. Two and 1/2 weeks is AWESOME for not being in the swing of exercising. Keep at it and the rewards will just get better!

    1. Thanks Kristen. I know, I probably should be giving myself a little more credit. I'm just afraid that on my next run I'm not going to be able to go that mile again...and then I'll be even more discouraged. But I will keep at it. I know that I can do this.

  6. A whole mile! That is fantastic! Be proud. I'm proud of you. :) Just think back 2 1/2 weeks ago to your first run - could you have easily ran a mile then? Woop woop! Go Christine, go Christine!

  8. I think it's great that you have such a good attitude about it! It's SO hard to get in a routine, especially when you're not used to it. I completely understand. Lots of luck!!
